Everyone at Sheffield Wednesday is saddened to learn of the passing of our former player Ian Mellor, aged 74.
Affectionately nicknamed ‘Spider’, he joined the Owls in 1979 and played a key role in our memorable promotion campaign of 1979/80 under the late Jack Charlton.
The forward netted the first goal in our 4-0 victory over neighbours Sheffield United, forever remembered as the ‘Boxing Day massacre’.
In total, Mellor made 79 appearances in the blue and white, scoring 11 goals.
He represented a raft of clubs during a two-decade career, most notably Brighton, Norwich and Manchester City.
Ian’s son Neil also went on to play for Wednesday through the 2010/11 campaign.
Our thoughts are with Ian’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
