Wednesday wrapped up the season by securing safety with a 2-0 win at Sunderland.
The relegation zone was left on the Wearside horizon as first half goals from Liam Palmer and Josh Windass dismissed lingering fears of the drop.
It was another polished, professional performance and a third win on the bounce just when it mattered the most.
The Owls started well, with no sign of nerves given the gravity of the occasion.
Marvin Johnson was a whisker away from connecting to Windass’ low cross as the visitors dominated the early possession.
Home fans had to wait beyond the 15-minute mark to see their side threaten as Patrick Collins sliced wide after finding space on the edge of the box.
Wednesday hit back with Windass latching on to a trademark Barry Bannan feed before rounding keeper Nathan Bishop but the angle was too acute from which to profit.
Sunderland did have the ball in the back of the net – Luke O’Nien heading home a set play – but a raised flag put paid to the celebrations.
Not so at the other end on 31 minutes as Wednesday made the breakthrough.
Bannan found Palmer with a delightful ball down the right of the area and the Owls stalwart slammed past Bishop.
The hosts, though, came within a lick of paint of a swift leveller when Jack Clarke, aiming for the top corner, could only watch in agony as his curling shot smashed against the post.
And the home side’s frustrations were compounded seven minutes before the break.
Pol Valentin raced down the right, saw off a strong challenge, and centred for Windass to fire into the back of the net from close range.
Sunderland were shell-shocked but missed a gilt-edged chance to halve the deficit when Roberts blasted over the top from 10 yards with the goal gaping.
The first half certainly went the way of Wednesday, who headed down the tunnel 45 minutes away from safety.
The second period lacked the action and drama of the first but for the Owls, it was all about managing the game.
And this they did to maximum effect. The ball rarely left Sunderland’s half for extended periods and when it did, the rearguard was solid and assured.
The clock started to wind down and although the Black Cats saw more of the play in the closing stages, Wednesday’s clean sheet grew all the more likely.
Collins drew a diving save from James Beadle and that was as good as it got for the Wearsiders.
At the other end, Wednesday were content to hang on to the ball - and ultimately their Championship status - on a momentous day to conclude a momentous S6 season.
